How Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Training Builds Confidence On and Off the Mat

When I first got into Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training, I had already spent years pushing myself through extreme sports. One thing became very clear early on: confidence plays a huge role, not just in sports, but in life.

Before starting BJJ, I grew up snowboarding in Santa Fe, New Mexico. My friends and I loved pushing the limits, jumping off cliffs, and throwing 360s off big jumps. The first time I dropped off a large cliff, it was terrifying.

What I learned quickly was this: the more confident you are, the safer you actually become. If you’re standing at the top of a cliff second-guessing yourself, your chances of making a mistake go way up. Confidence helps you commit. It helps you execute. Sometimes, I’d even listen to music to get myself into that confident mindset before taking the leap.

Confidence Under Pressure: Lessons Before BJJ

In my early 20s, I moved to Crested Butte and got into class five creek boating. If you’ve ever kayaked or rafted, you know how intense that can be.

Once again, I was reminded how important confidence is. Standing at the top of a dangerous section, I would center myself and visualize all the times I had succeeded before. That mental preparation built belief, and belief improved performance.

The same principle kept showing up: when I trusted myself, I performed better and stayed safer.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Training and Building Confidence

At 25, I moved to Boulder, Colorado, and started training. Eventually, that path led me to where I am today, coaching and training students in BJJ Fort Collins.

Right away, I was hooked. I loved the adrenaline, the challenge, and the feeling of being fully present in the moment.

In a grappling match, you experience many of the same emotions as in extreme sports. And just like before, confidence plays a massive role.

If you don’t believe in what you’re doing, if you think, “I’m not good at this submission, they’ll escape” – they probably will. But when you trust your training and draw on past success, everything changes.

Confidence allows you to commit.

The Balance Between Confidence and Ego

There’s an important balance here.

If you’re constantly second-guessing yourself while rolling, your chances of success drop. But if you go too far the other way, training with ego instead of discipline, you’ll struggle as well.

True confidence in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training comes from consistency:

  • Showing up
  • Drilling techniques
  • Learning from mistakes
  • Staying humble

Confidence isn’t about thinking you’re the best—it’s about trusting that you’re improving.

How BJJ Translates to Confidence Off the Mat

One of the biggest reasons I believe in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Fort Collins training is how much it carries over into everyday life.

After more than 25 years of training, I’ve learned:

  • To believe in myself
  • To stay calm under pressure
  • To keep going even when things are difficult

These lessons don’t stay on the mat; they show up everywhere.

When people lose confidence in themselves, it affects everything: work, relationships, and decision-making. But when you build confidence through training, it changes how you carry yourself in the world.

People are naturally drawn to confidence. Whether it’s a job interview or a conversation, others can feel it.
