What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a modern martial art that focuses on ground fighting, submissions, and leverage-based techniques. Perfected by the Gracie family in Brazil, BJJ emphasizes controlling an opponent through positional dominance, joint locks, chokes, and strategic movement—rather than relying on size or strength.
Unlike some martial arts that focus on striking, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu teaches students how to defend themselves using throws, holds, and submissions. While beginners learn techniques step-by-step, the true art of BJJ lies in seamlessly transitioning between movements to control or neutralize an opponent.
BJJ is both a powerful form of self-defense and a mentally engaging sport that continues to grow in popularity worldwide.

If you’re new to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, your first class will take place in one of our Fundamentals sessions, specifically designed for beginners. Before class starts, you’ll have a 30-minute intro with one of our coaches to go over BJJ basics, including mat etiquette, key positions, and a brief overview of the sport’s history.
After the intro, you’ll join the regular class. Students line up by rank, bow in together, and begin with a 10-minute warm-up. Then, your coach will demonstrate techniques, and you’ll partner up to practice them. Class finishes with light, live training, giving you a chance to apply what you’ve learned in real time.
If you have previous Jiu-Jitsu experience, we may invite you to join an intermediate or advanced class instead.
